The Struggle of Being Who We Really Are

Dear Wannabe (Me),

I remember the scene in the Matrix where the Oracle spells out what’s written in her kitchen, “Know Thyself”. But what does that mean? Are we aware of how we come off to others? Are we aware of our inner most thoughts? Not really. The bulk of us have carefully designed an outwards persona with much deliberation, highly skilled effort and laborious detailed attention. The REAL us is somewhere buried, smothered by all the layers of pain, anger and loss. I believe we began masking when our scars first formed. It happened long ago when we reached out to be loved from our mother/father/sibling/wife/husband and no one reached back with love.

We tell our selves, “I’m never going to trust a woman again”. Or we start reading books like the "Art of War" in order to cope in our collectively created world that is deemed dangerous and not to be trusted. Some of us have spent our entire lives MASKING and I’m not talking about Mardi Gras even though that has something to do with the tradition. As Kanye said, “they make us hate our self and love they wealth.” Interesting…who is they? And why do we hate our selves so much? Why is money the fall guy?

Leave it to the pansies, the feelers, or the Empaths of this world to attempt to answer those questions. I happen to be one of these people. Amongst us are the crazy folks that we call actors, ironically. Just when the rest of the world is strapping on their weapons of mass defense; these guys are seeking ways to disarm themselves. They go on voyages to places others have labeled forbidden such as the exploration to inner self. It is there where we unlock the good, the bad and the ugly. It is there where the fiercest battles are raging. I’m not sure who Kanye was referring to when he said “they”. Perhaps, the real “they” is us. I think what Ye was saying is very true. We don’t like who we are too often. And we try to hide it from the world with a little Vuitton or Gucci.

Yesterday, I found myself in a Method Acting course based on the Ivana Chubbuck method. For those of you who don’t know, the “Method” as it’s been famously phrased has a number of definitions. But for me it’s a series of acting techniques to disarm actors from their public personas in order to discover who they really are . Sounds a lot like a psych class right? That’s actually pretty accurate. The only difference is instead of talking about your problems behind closed doors with a therapist; you’re on display, on stage, on set working it all out. ACTION!!!

Previous to this class, I had told myself several times that I would enroll in a class like this one. But I was always reluctant for good reason until Bright said she wanted to go and I decided to tag along. I was skeptical that a class that exposed a person’s deepest, tormented moments could become counterproductive. I mean I already know that the brain doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what is pretend.  That means reliving the past could be dangerous.  However, I’ve spent countless hours and years with my inner most feelings, trying to see the patterns of why I am the way I am.  In fact, I feel like the bulk of what I do day in and day out is help others get in touch with what they are feeling at that moment.  After high school teaching, I’ve never really been afraid to expose myself in order to get others to come out into the open air and speak freely.

But boy does it cause a lot of controversy when you're not pretending, I mean acting. Sometimes family and friends fall back when they're around me, they don’t like that feeling of being exposed or to talk about their inner most feelings. After all, who am I to see and to speak on what they have tried to hide for years? But that is an actor’s job to see and to feel what others can’t or don’t want to reveal. We’re like detectives watching body language, listening to tone (anything) to give away a person’s true intent. We need to figure out a person’s motivation in order to do our thing. And we all know that motivation is tucked deep inside a person’s heart and mind.

And there I was in the second to last row of the small theatre observing all the actors who were fearful of truly exposing themselves. At one point during an exercise, a young nurse emerged onstage with her own personal story; I found myself sobbing beyond belief. She revealed being in an abusive relationship, wanting to end her life and feeling helpless. She didn’t have to say anything though; her whole demeanor and energy gave away her personal sadness. After she spoke, I had to give her a hug. Actually Bright and I both gave her hugs. Part of it was for her, the other part was for me; I felt drained and depressed. I looked at the actors as a microcosm of the real world. How could it be that the world was without this much love? Where were the happy stories, the actors gleaming with joy? Sadness.

Up until now, I’ve been performing freely, somewhat a vigilante in the acting game using nothing but instincts on stage. I’ve taken two classes (that don’t look good on a resume), one in acting theory and the other in film technique. But when I’m “acting”, I use my life’s experiences; the highs and the lows. But perhaps it will do me good to study a format, a prescribed method. I have to admit, I’m always skeptical about formats, procedures and regimented ways of study. I believe our best teacher is ourselves.

But maybe there was something else lurking. In the last few months I was beginning to avoid acting all together like I had once decided to avoid teaching.  I knew what it was but I begin to squirm in the back of the theatre as the teacher actually said it out loud during the last 10 minutes of class. He said something like, “actors get paid the big bucks because they are willing to EXPOSE themselves front and center to the world. The rest of the world doesn’t want to deal with their “shit” so they watch us squirm, cry, bleed and suffer in order for viewers to say, ‘oh I know how that feels’.”

I was back at square one. I remember being a brand new teacher in class. I felt naked. I had no instructions, no books, no nothing but ME.  It's funny, teachers go to college to learn how to become teachers of methodology and subject matter experts.  But how can you teach a single child when you don't know who you are?  It's impossible.  Anywho...That’s when I first discovered who I was. The kids were intent on sniffing me out; they had disposed of 6 other teachers before me who had decided to play the “role” of teacher. That wasn’t going to cut it with these kids. I felt like crying, screaming, and quitting. Why wouldn’t they just accept me as the Professional that I am? Professional, smessional…kids know real from fake. PERIOD! All those fancy higher education degrees don’t matter with kids. They see through the BULL. They know if you’re there for a check or if you care about them.  They also know if you have something to hide.  When you hide, it's GAME OVER.  They don't believe you.  In the words of Jay, "...you need more people."  And after week one, something happened.

I let down my guard completely and was me. And one by one, all the bad ass kids came forward like a right of passage. They started to trust me. They showed up, listened and most of all they begin to believe in me. It was the weight of that responsibility that drove me out of the game. What if what I was teaching them was untrue? I wanted them to live COURAGEOUSLY to become more than their parents and their circumstances. But the environment suggested I was wrong. It countered me step by step with blows from every direction. It whispered, “don’t get caught slippin, watch your back’”, “get money by any means necessary”, and “women can’t be trusted”. Damn, I was just a 22 year old kid with high hopes, armed with a chubby cheek smile and passion. What if one’s environment conquered the soul I thought? And when I left the class for music it almost conqurered mine.  But I digress...

Perhaps I was too young to counter the world’s push back while I was in the classroom.  I remember Ye in the class saying the music game was worse than the dope game.  LOL  You would've thought I listened but I'm stubborn and off to the music industry I went.  To my detriment I couldn’t “mask” in the music business.  I was damaged goods by their standards. I was too open, to trusting, too transparent. In fact, that move costs me more than I care to mention. The only people I really got along with were the artists themselves.   This place is no place for an artist, for an open soul. Our current world that’s filled with rampant fear feeds on negativity, scarcity and lack. Some artists can’t survive those bitter blows because inside they feel differntly, they're creators. Several develop drug habits to numb the pain. And in the back of the theatre, I felt that weight again.

Why did I want people to see themselves in the first place? Most artists were never fully appreciated or worse off they were ostracized until a gazillion years later when folks said, “AHA”.  Did I really want to go down this path? At least the kids in the class were genuine and made me laugh.

Besides, I had found a cool place to hide out in life…an office filled with some really laid back folks. Why go back on the battleground? People are content watching reality TV, jazzlin’ their lil lives away.  Most people ARE NOT READY to see who they are and God forbid if you’re the one to show them.  I’ve made that mistake waaaaay too often. Show a person their talents, they might resent you. Now they can’t ignore their abilities. Show a person their strength.  And they can no longer act weak.  Perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve learned most recently is, don’t give others visions of grandeur about what they could become in this lifetime as Rick James might say.  If they’re fearful of becomming more, they’ll resent you and they'll think that you're judging them.  Somehow, when you're open, like a mirror you tend to expose too much of others.  And folks either fight or flee.

There is a price to pay to try to inspire/change/teach others. There is a price to pay to inspire/change/teach yourself to become more and brighter. That price is usually solitude.  It’s like my reoccurring dream of me high up on the skyscrapper and I'm alone.  My dad always tells me that “no good deed goes unpunished”. I always hated that quote. Why would good be punished? Jay Z uses that quote on Drake’s new album.  He admits that his path in music altered him for GOOD.  On the song “light up’ he says, “...And since no good deed go unpunished/ I’m not as cool with ni**** as I once was/ I once was, cool as the Fonz was/ But these bright lights turned me to a monster/ Sorry, mama,/I promised it wouldn't change me /But I would've went insane had I remained the same me.”

That saddens me.  But I feel him.  Man do I feel him.

Then again, art may be the only safe ground for those seeking change in this external world. I can always fall back on…it’s just pretend, right?  I'm just an actress.  I don’t know for sure though. People say having empathy is a gift. But often times, it feels like a curse in this world. No one wants to feel unless it isn't real.

To be continued…

Creativity...Who needs it?

Creativity according to Yay:
http://www.kanyewest.com/2010/03/02/creativity/

My response to him (below)

Most of the world never questions anything, and they damn sure don’t question anything about themselves. It’s sooo much easier to point fingers. People don’t know why they wear the shirt on their back or why they style their hair the way they do. They don’t even know why they sit for 2-3 hours in the church they have chosen. For the creative, it’s painful to go with the flow, to fit into a particular mold of patterns.

Being comfortable is never comfortable; the creative never fits in; perhaps a swig of Jack soothes the pain…

I think that’s why I like to dream in barren landscapes. The possibility to create is immensely infinite. Where there is already structure; opinions and facts about those structures have been created. Where there is trash and waste, there is only room for beauty and boundless options. And most important, when trash is transformed into beauty, the landscape is not only transformed but the inhabitants are rid of their inner waste. Creating something from nothing, like Ye says, is magic. I’ve seen it produce the most unlikely results, fruit even.

But without belief, creativity is useless. Don’t lose your belief Ye…keep your faith. The world’s evolution depends on dreamers.

My Life's Purpose

There was an opening article “How to Discover Your Life’s Purpose in about 20 minutes” from Steve Pavlina that I remember reading a few months ago. http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/01/how-to-discover-your-life-purpose-in-about-20-minutes/

He said in order to find your life’s purpose sit still and then write at the top of the page “What is my TRUE purpose in life”? At first most of the stuff that you write is surface crap according to him. I guess one could write things like to become a millionaire and to have plenty of women. Then your purposes may get a bit deeper like to become an actress, to be a director, or to be a librarian. But after awhile if you force yourself to keep asking the question, it will APPEAR…it’s the purpose that makes you cry uncontrollably. It sounded interesting enough but I never got around to actually taking the test but…

This morning I got a text from http://www.idealist.org/. Dope website BTW. And as part of the text message they send 2-3 job postings per day. One of which was a gig for an Inner City Arts Theatre Manager. Now I had no intention on applying for the job, but “Inner City Arts” peaked my interest. And when I went on their site to learn more about the organization, I spotted their headquarters. The building was BEAUTIFUL! I mean the type of design and architecture that would be featured on Kanye West’s Blog. But this wasn’t located in Beverly Hills or in Brentwood, or even in Santa Monica; it’s was located in, well, the inner city of Los Angeles. And when I imagined a scene of kids pouring into the building, I started crying. I remember the first time I saw my school's campus in Brentwood, it was beyond belief. And at my desk, the tears swelled up in my eyes, it was out of my control. Then I remembered Steve’s blog.

My life changed when my environment changed. I remember going from having bars outside my apartment's windows to driving through neighborhoods filled with mansions. But I had to travel to a whole new world to experience the beauty. Little did I know back then, that when a person changes inside so does her environment. I was a BIG dreamer even as a child.

But to dream is one thing, to set out to fulfill a life's mission is a whole 'nother thing. Thanks Steve, who knew my purpose, was so simple. It’s the purpose that makes you cry with or without your permission.

My life’s purpose:
To become the most brilliant (light-bearing) person I can be in this lifetime by helping to ignite the fire and passion in others whose light is barely flickering; to inspire “inner city youth”, the have-nots, the edge-dwellers, the outcast, the forgotten to dream beyond seeming limitations and in the process, transform barren landscapes of hopelessness to expressions of beauty and unparalleled art.
The words just came. We are here for a purpose. And it ain’t got nothing to do with your mortgage, your rims, or your iphone.

Who's Watching You?

With all that is going on in the media re Tiger Woods (I don't even watch tv and I am so over hearing about it, seriously) it made me think of something Shak said to me last year, "People are watching you Bright.  I'm watching you."  The gift and the curse of a leader.  She can tell me that because she lives it, too.  When I'm on the hill and I want to just stop, because it always crosses my mind, I don't.  There's definite pride in there that won't let me quit but there are people who are motivated by what I do, as well.  How can this chick who looks like that not give up.  I mean let's be real, I don't have a runner's build but that's what makes it all the more dope.  I did my first 10k this year and I started running for the first time in life last year.  Like Shak says, you expect the thin chick to beat everyone or outlast everyone but what about someone like her (Shak) who has a similar shape to mine, fit and curvy, and is KILLING 'EM.  And I mean she kills them, beats everybody... dudes... chicks... it doesn't matter.  But she's fast as all get out because she decided to be so.  So, when there are people who are at the top of whatever game and they cheat on their spouse or pull a Kanye why are people like, "Damn, not you man?"  Why do we hold these people at such high regard?  Because they make us believe that we can be the best at something, too.  I don't think that they should be messiah-ed, because we are all human.  But the truth is people lose faith in themselves because you were that embodiment of what the best possible them could be if they tried.  The fact is when you sign up to be a leader, that's how you'll be treated.  I believe in second chances, at the same time you have to own your space.

When I hear it said that these business men/women, athletes, musicians should just expect that they are role models that kind of bothers me because it sounds a liiiittle bit like sideline critics.  You don't know what it's like to live such and such a life, neither do I...just yet.  What I do know is the pressure I put on myself to succeed.  I now am aware that other people I know who've watched me grow up and move clear across the country by myself are also looking to me to succeed.  I don't have a model for what I'm going after and that makes it all the more nerve wracking but I'll be proof that it can happen, it will happen because when I want to stop you're watching me and I can't give up.

Mirror Mirror On the Wall...

I must have written about 50 emails to Bright this past week entailing information about obtaining success. On our mighty quest to find the ingredients for success aka THE BLUEPRINT for dreamers; I've found that one particular flavor overpowers the entire gumbo. I've been consciously researching success for at least the past 4 years. In fact it is the main reason for this site. We wanted to discover, and share with all, the blueprint to finding one's dreams. We thought, hell if we could learn how to grow and to gain success; perhaps others out there would heed the call as well.

In the beginning I thought it was talent, that if one was talented enough they could surely become successful. Maybe one had to be born with a hidden genius that predisposed her to a particular occupation thus giving her an advantage. But after a few years in the music industry trying desperately to "put on" a music producer with superb talent; I noticed that wasn't the case. There were several talents (producers, rappers, singers) who were highly successful (meaning they had obtained their initial dreams) with marginal amounts of talent (that's subjective of course).

That led me to research work ethic, maybe in order to make it to the "top" of the pile, one had to train like a total psycho, give up all comfort and attain success THE HARD WAY. I reasoned it had to be perseverance. If one could only persevere long enough he could finally reach his goal of being a (fill in the blank). In 08, I begin training with religious-like attention, waking up at 4:30 am, running the hills of Los Angeles and torturing myself with sprinting with chains and tires. I would work after and then hit the repeat button the next day. But I started to find counter arguments to this hypothesis, there were lazy people, chillin' at the gym, and all around me who had also found a way to manifest their dreams. How in the hell could this be? They irritated me as they sipped their lattes at Starbucks.

Well maybe it was education. In order to reach a certain level of one's dream one would have to possess the faculties of higher education via experience, college, a master's program or doctorate. If one had enough knowledge than he could reach his goal of obtaining one's dream. I looked at my own situation out of desperation. The majority of my friends had obtained an advanced degree (masters/doctorate). Maybe it was time for me to take it up a notch and gain more knowledge in order to get closer to my dream. The problem was, some of them didn't even have a job let alone a dream career. Most of you know someone with several degrees that hasn't gained any ground in reaching their dreams. Kanye, is a poster boy for this argument.

Then what the hell is the secret ingredient to success? You guys have no idea of my level of exhaustion, to what extent I've tiredly studied until the wee hours in the morning seeking this answer. I've studied ancient philosophers, religious doctrines, self help gurus, rappers, poets, actors, teachers. You name them, there's a 50/50 chance I've researched their theories. I couldn't shake it, I had to find the damn answer to the riddle, assuming of course there was an answer or answers to be found. Poor Bright, sometimes I wonder how she can deal with me at all. I would call her at totally unacceptable times of the night out of sheer excitement that I had gotten a step closer; only to realize the next day that I had found a dead end.

And when I finally saw the truth, it was so familiar to me, I'm convinced I knew it but lost it along the way. I realized how the truth is so simple. It sucks that it always is...kinda makes you feel a bit dumb for spending oh I don't know 3, 5, 10 years trying to rediscover it. The truth is that when you begin to believe in your own God-given power, NO ONE...and I mean NO ONE will be able to come close to what you are capable of doing. That's it...the secret ingredient to success is the power of BELIEF. And whether you want to believe this or not, everything that you have in your current life is because you believed it was so. I know I didn't want to accept the bad stuff that was in my life; that actually is what caused me to blame others and not take personal responsibility. On the flip side, I realized I had become a teacher, a music industry analyst, a corporate trainer because I believed I could. And most recently, I've decide to become an actress...and yes, you've guessed it...I'm acting.

"What so ever ye desire when ye pray, that ye receive and it shall be given..." As a man thinketh, so he is". --Mat 21:22
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened". --Mat 7:7-11

Not to get all religious on yall, because clearly I'm not an expert on the subject but it's in almost every religous doctrine, and it's also in every get rich book, soon I believe the same truth will be proven scientifically as well. And please don't take my word for it. Spend 2, 3, 6, 10 years discovering the truth for yourself. Perhaps, you may have to in order to gain the belief. That's the next puzzle I'm trying to solve. How do you give one belief? Is it possible? You tell me. I mean people see miracles every day and still can't see.

So I don't want to hear anymore nonsense about how Soulja Boy has ruined Hip Hop, or how Tyler Perry isn't that talented or how Britney Spears is a horrible singer, or how (fill in the blank) has no reason to be where they are as an excuse to why you're where you are at currently. Talent, ultimately does not matter in terms of obtaining one's dream. Yikes! What did she just say? Of course it's wonderful when one has an amazing talent; then we can revel in the beauty, the experience, the wonder of that person's gift. But it's all subjective. What I love you might hate. So is it helpful to have talent? Of course. But necessary it is not. Wait I'm starting to sound like freakin' Yoda here. (Jedi in training baby, you best believe it). Sorry, ok talent, drive, great work ethic all play there part in becoming successful. But the key is without belief, those ingredients are powerless. I REPEAT on the loudest, imaginary bull horn that you are now listening too: Belief in and of itself will give you the ability to gain talent, to gain vision, to gain drive and finally to succeed. Now how do you begin to cultivate that inner belief? Sorry, I'm still a pedawon in training. More to come from my research.

P.S. It's gotta be a damn good day. Google has cookie monster on it. (And I love cookies) Random but not really. Become everything you want to become. Just be careful about what it is you want to become. It's simple, look around you, listen to those around you...they will tell you who you are and what you've believed this far.

I'm Inspired By: Aristotle

Aristotle suggested, "A tragedy is the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself ... with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its catharsis of such emotions."

I don't know why I'm enthralled by Tragedy. Macbeth was by far my favorite Shakespearean play. I had such high hopes for him before his downfall. Perhaps it's the depth of emotion that occurs when I engage in the Tragic Hero's journey. I feel a sense of release by empathizing with the character. One thing's for sure, I better be careful what I'm paying attention to because reality has a way of mirroring art.

Come on...happy, happy thoughts. No more dating guys that mirror Joaquin Phoenix's deep-brooding, poor, tortured soul. (Ahem)

I think it's the tragedies that make the most apathetic hearts feel something. And isn't that what acting is all about? Making the audience FEEL. It's wonderful to laugh and to experience joy while taking in a flick. But sometimes, in those dark and seemingly isolated theatres when we cry our hearts out for the "tragic character"; we're become deeply invested in his/her final results. But why? In effect, we're sympathizing with the character while also purifying ourselves from personal past hurt.

In a world where feeling and emotions are somewhat Taboo. And boys are told to 'act like a man', translation, don't show your emotions or else you'll be perceived as weak. The opportunities for emotional release are few and far between. Thank god for the mighty Arts, it is the goal...no it is the job of the artist to conjure up human emotions like a alchemist turns lead into gold.
I have to quote Yeezy here to illustrate my point, "Now I speak from the heart, you all fronting. Everybody feel a way about K but at least you all feel something." Couldn't agree with him more. Most characters, I mean people, are just blah, blah, blah...just there in the background. I couldn't pin-point if most folks annoy me, inspire me, irritate me or what. They're just there. Wouldn't the world be much more interesting if folks weren't afraid to be who they really are?

Who's Bad?

"Out beyond the ideas of right doing and wrong doing there is a field and I will meet you there." - Rumi

There's a lot of talk about who should and shouldn't be revered.  Amber Rose, for instance, received a lot of flack and probably still does about who she is/was.  She's a stripper "turned" model with tatoos, short hair, shapely (she's got curves like real women do and some wish they had)...what is SHE doing being a model and no less in ELLE?!  The fact is, she is a force to be reckoned with because she has tenacity and the will and the courage to BE herself no matter what people think.  The same with Ye, you know the outspoken guy with so much to say, who is a "rapper" who made an album of singing songs, who wears sweaters, polos, leather, all white suits...ummm whatever he so chooses and who designs stuff for Louis Vuitton.  And there's Jay, the guy from Marcy who used to sell drugs, who grew up in the projects, who was accused of stabbing a guy in a club...who owns his own clothing label, is partnered with LiveNation, was the President of Def Jam, who is part owner of the Nets....  There's Oprah, who came from Mississppi, who built up her own brand including and not limited to a satellite radio station, television networks, a girls school in Africa, a magazine and is one of the most trusted names in, I would be so bold as to say, at least 85% of households in the US, not to mention abroad.  All of the aforementioned accolades are not the summation of the above's accomplishments but just a few.  These are people whose lives could have been ordinary or super crappy.  These are people who could have gone down a totally different path but (and that's a big BUT) they didn't.

"We accept the cards life gave us.  But we decide how to play." - Paulo Coelho via Twitter

They each made a decision to make their tomorrows bigger than their yesterdays.  What will you do with today?

"Do, every day, ALL that can be done that day." - S.O.G.R.

I've taken the above statement very seriously.  The adage of "why put off until tomorrow what you can do today", is so real.  That's the difference between those who want to become and those who are.  It's in the little things that I accomplish that become bigger things.  How can I expect to be more in the here and now unless I am more right now.  Unless I fill the space that I have with maximizing my life and my potential every moment of everyday how will I really succeed?  It does not mean that I don't have fun; I went to a hockey game today.  I also took a 6 hour mentoring training class early this morning and met with a screenwriter right after, to get some mentoring of my own.  I still have a lot of growth ahead of me but as long as I see more successes in my days to come then my life as a whole is a success and I will be the embodiment of more.  If I do things half way then I will only be at 50%.  Here's to being 100 all the time.

Kanye West & Ralph Waldo Emerson...Am I still Inspired by Ye?

Wow, I logged on to our site this morning and realized the last blog I posted was "I'm Inspired by Kanye West". Interesting how timing has a way of being 'just on time' or 'just at the wrong time'. I thought to myself should I take the blog down considering the ultimate 'dumb-dumb' move he made a few days ago when he decided to yank the mic from a 17 year old country singer? Or do I leave it him up on the blog? After all, I meant exactly what I said in the last blog about him, he inspires me, mainly because he's just being himself for better or for worse.

I think it's times like these when I think about the complexity of human beings and what it truly means to be human. As I prepare to take the stage this week, I realize that my character, Candice, while an upstanding member of her church is clearly not without fault. Her anger and her bitterness at times gets the best of her, and her faith is put to the test. Hell, at some point don't we all do things that we wish we hadn't? Maybe some of us don't ever walk out on a limb, testing what we really do believe...and that's just it. Some of us are content with not living at all, not figuring out for ourselves what is wrong and what is right. Of course the danger of really "living" is that there are things that we will do along the way that we can't come back from doing, that leave a Hester Prynne like mark permanently attached to our reputation.

And while I don't agree with Ye's antics the night of the VMAs (I would have grabbed the mic back), as an actress, he made me painfully aware of the range of free human expression. Most of us are not free to be who we really are for better or worse, we hide behind who we think we should be, what we think society thinks we should be. When I think of Ye, I can't help but think of Emerson who says, "No law can be sacred to me unless it's a law of my nature. Good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this; the only right is what is after my constitution, the only wrong is what is against it." DAMN...if that ain't gangsta then what is? The question is what if one's nature is volatile, creative, temperamental and unstable? Well I think we know the answer to that question.

And while I personally would never snatch a mic from a kid at an award's show; I'm not qualified to say what I have and would do that appalls society. I've never liked the crackerjack box-like comfort of being labeled the 'nice' girl. I mean God forbid the day I break that particular mold by doing one thing that shatters that image. When that day comes, I only hope folks realize, there were no drugs, no crazy boys to 'put me up to it', no forms of depression that induced my crazy behavior. The truth is it's already in my nature, always was and always will be.

What is Reality? I'm Inspired by Kanye West

I love this quote by Margaret Halsey :
"Reality is above all else a variable, and nobody is qualified to say that he or she knows exactly what it is. As a matter of fact, with a firm enough commitment, you can sometimes create a reality which did not exist before".
Word. Folks can say what they wish about rappers, but I'll say this much, they're some of the most prophetic dreamers of our time. Kanye West, who seemingly envisioned his way to the top classifies this experience in his song, "The Last Call" on the College Dropout album.
"You can't say sh** to Kanye West no more
I rocked 20,000 people, I was just on tour, n****
I'm Kan, the Louis Vuitton Don,
Bought my mom a purse, now she Louis Vuitton Mom
I ain't play the hand I was dealt, I changed my cards
I prayed to the skies and I changed my stars
I went to the malls and I balled too hard..."

P.S. Hmmmm really, last time I checked this kid Ye was designing stuff for Louie V., and rocking way more kids on tour than any 20,000. That's it...starting today, I'm B.C.B.G. Shak with the Gucci heeled straps!

Go Hard or... Well, You Know the Rest

A few weeks back (7/15/09), Shak's homie, Dame Taylor(on the Beat), posted a blog about a random producer stating that he was the best in the state of Maryland followed by his question "who cares?" Understandably, there are tons of people touting that they're "the best" at this or that and they kinda...ok, majorly SUCK. Here's my response to the posting:

alright, i feel where you're coming from but let me pose this question to you... if you walk the earth stating that you're merely "alright" then that's what you'll always be. maybe that dude in maryland sucks, maybe. maybe he'll never amount to anything, maybe. but at least he's calling claim to what he wants. a lot of people look to the outside world to up their SELF esteem and like katt williams stated "it's called esteem of your mf'ing SELF". feel me? people like pharrell, beyonce, russell, will, etc didn't get to where they are because they touted they wanted to be the "most alright [fill in the blank]". will smith proclaimed that he wanted to be the biggest movie star and that's what he made out of himself. seriously. just because right now they seem to be a bit more humble to you, don't get it twisted... russell, beyonce, et al are more confident on the daily than most people can hope to think about. they MADE the way for themselves by claiming it, proclaiming it even all the while putting in the hard work to make it come true. you HAVE to proclaim what ever it may be that you want or else you'll sit there waiting, like so many super talented people do, for someone to hand it to you instead of getting it. do you really think that diddy got where he is by stating he wants to be an alright, cool producer? that doesn't even sound like smth that would come out of his mouth, right? soulja boy proclaimed it and was signing autographs before he made it. he put himself on in a major way. so, whereas i may not dig someone's "talent", i respect their grind and their hustle. EVERYONE's success began as a proclamation that they would in fact succeed. it's not happenstance.
btw, big ups to DTOTB (dame taylor on the beat). that's my best friend's boy.

Yesterday, while speaking to Diesel(Shak) about writing my goals for this yr and my complete goal/vision for life in full smth she said struck a chord with me, yet again. lol Gotta love the inspiration. :)
Anyhoo...so she said smth regarding being the best actress and how Deej(a friend of hers) said, "if you didn't want to be the best then why go at all?" Well, I was thinking about that while doing my prayers and it occurred to me that I've never said, "I want to be the best director." WOW. I mean, I've said I want to be critically acclaimed and world renowned but I've never said "the best". So, that's smth I've gotta and did change as of this am. I have to keep practicing it; to keep feeling that feeling of being the best when I think it and envision it but I've started! yes. :) It's kinda like me saying that I will be on par or better than Alfred Hitchock. That's a tall order for me to wrap my head around but I have to do it b/c he is, in fact, no better than I. We all have to start somewhere and where we begin has no real bearing on how far we go or how brightly we shine. Russell, Ye, Will, etc all started out wack or at best soooo not where they are today but they just. kept. going. That's what it's all about. As long as you START, you're in the game.
