My friend that’s a writer, Alison Diem, sent me a link yesterday to an author she adores. So I decided to go on his site. There was this super dope essay where the author, Neil Gaiman, talks about how he gets his ideas.
Check it: Where do you get your ideas? by Neil Gaiman (1997)

Basically he tells the interviewer that he makes them up from out of his head. And I thought that was fair enough, God only knows the crazy stuff I come up with on a regular. But the great part about the article is his discussion about folks who swear they have the best ideas in the world. In so many words he tells the interviewer that everyone has ideas. What makes a person “the truth” is that she CREATES her ideas by writing them down into a book, a song, a business plan...you get the point.
He said the hardest part is forcing your self to sit, with total discipline and writing word by word. I was relieved to hear his testimony. I know it’s painfully difficult to just DO ANYTHING CONSISTENTLY.
Perhaps that’s the difference b/w doers and dreamers. Being a popular writer has its downside, he said he always gets approached to “collaborate” on idea based projects. Folks tell him they have a great idea and all he has to do is his part, write it into a novel and they can split the rewards 50/50. LOL
P.S. Ideas are friendly lil critters, always skipping along, in endless supply, looking for another engaging conversation with the next guy. Discipline on the other hand, is a temperamental beast that speaks on occasion, big in stature but slow to move, looking to avoid another gig.
